Growth Capital Ventures Guest Editorial
Growth Capital Ventures (GCV) is a financial services investment firm with a difference – we use technology and specifically-developed platforms to streamline the entire fundraising and investment processes for both investor and investee alike.
Serving two complementary markets, we help ambitious businesses (who meet our criteria of having the potential for high growth and making a real social impact) raise the finance needed for expansion, whilst simultaneously providing investors the opportunity to invest in such businesses.
Working extremely closely with businesses and entrepreneurs, we help them prepare in the pre- and post-funding stages. For investors, we provide the chance to share in the growth journey of these businesses in a tax efficient way.
Our investment opportunities are placed onto our dedicated online co-investment platform, GrowthFunders, which brings our funding opportunities to a wider range of investors.
Investors can access all the available information on the opportunities via the platform, then easily invest from as little as £100, giving them the opportunity to build a balanced and diversified portfolio.
The focal point of GrowthFunders is it presents a range of diverse opportunities which may not otherwise be easily available, allowing retail investors to build a portfolio alongside experienced investors.
P2P lending and offline investor networks
In addition to our online co-investment platform, we are also developing GrowthLenders, a peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform, giving people an opportunity to share in property-based deals.
What’s more, we have G.Ventures, an offline network of experienced investors and high net worth individuals.
Having frequently been successful entrepreneurs themselves, many choose to work closely with the companies within which they invest, often even taking a non-exec or advisory role where they feel they can add value. These like-minded people have a personal relationship with GCV and/or with each other.
Investing for impact and growth
We’re committed at GCV to impact investing and our aim is to bring businesses and investors together, where three important criteria can be met – high growth potential, the ability to make a real impact and bringing about positive social change, and the ability to take advantage of significant tax advantages.
This focus on impact investing stems from GCV’s co-founders, brothers Norm and Craig Peterson, who both saw the banking crisis and subsequent credit crunch from the sharp end and came out of it determined to do things differently.
The pair, who had separate careers, but who were both involved in raising capital for businesses and projects, saw first-hand how the established bank and finance markets had let growing businesses down.
Starting as a talented footballer for Hull City before moving into project management, Norm worked on large scale telecoms and broadband infrastructure projects, later moving into residential and commercial property sectors before becoming Director of Network Strategy at Bell Cable.
Responsible for raising capital to fund construction of large broadband networks throughout the UK, this position gave Norm his first experience in project financing, later buying into a European broadband startup and raising more than £60m from US based Venture Capital funds.
Meanwhile, Craig had became a residential project manager for Taylor Wimpey/Bryant Homes in the late 1990s, rising to Regional Production Director before co-founding luxury housing and property company Carlton & Co with Norman in the 2000s.
Going on to study for an MBA, with a focus on the rise of the Alternative Finance Sector as part of his research project, both Craig and Norm have always been involved in raising finance for their own businesses and development sites.
Successes and achievements
Back in 2010, the alternative finance sector was in its infancy with equity crowdfunding and peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms emerging. It was apparent that technology was changing the way we invest and raise capital, and GCV have grown to be home to one of the leading co-investment platforms, with numerous successes to date.
Most recently, GCV have further expanded their investment portfolio by facilitating the most recent investment made into the UK’s leading digital challenger bank, Atom Bank.
Atom initially approached GCV to raise £15m. GCV quickly received commitments from private investors for £1m, so when a leading fund manager offered £15m, the total was raised to £16m. The funds, which GVC raised in a week, came from a total of 44 investors.
Last year, Growth Capital Ventures took a significant step in its own development when it joined forces with private equity company Maven Capital Partners.
Maven, who operate from a nationwide network of regional offices, is one of the UK’s leading small cap private equity and property managers, with a nationwide network of regional offices and having more than £400m of client funds under management.
Making a £1.1m equity-based investment into GCV, the investment has assisted with GCV’s considerable growth in 2017 and will continue to support the ambitious plans into 2018 and beyond.
